Virtual tour of the exhibition 51000 Balthazargrad at the MoMCA - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, presented by our supporter Rijeka - a European Capital of Culture 2020. The exhibition will be presented by Željko Luketić (main curator), Kristina Volf (creative director) and Zoran Krusvar.

51000 Balthazarcity
51000 Balthazarcity is one of the main exhibitions of 2020 European Capital of Culture project.
From 1967 to 1978, the animated adventures of the famous inventor Professor Balthazar came ''dripping'' from “Zagreb Film” studios, the same way the genius ideas dripped from his legendary machine. The grey-haired professor solved problems for his friends and fellow citizens, as he helped them out through all sorts of troubles.
Almost every adventure opened with a frame of the glorious Balthazarcity, which looked just like something that came out of the wise professor’s imagination. Or it may be that the city, where diversity, acceptance, friendship, science, creativity, play and freedom win every single time, is the origin of that genius mind itself?
Balthazarcity found its roots in Rijeka. One of the authors, Zlatko Bourek, felt inspired by the harbour, dockhands, laborers and culture workers, harmonious cohabitation of classical art and the industry that built it. The everyday work from which the town grows, on hands and destinies of its citizens, was the perfect creative fuel for Balthazar, the character who, by helping big and small people, built an entire town of justice, harmony, magic and play.
Being linked in such a way, the citizens of Rijeka felt a special connection to Professor Balthazar and to Balthazarcity. Therefore, it was obvious to open the first big exhibition dedicated to Professor Balthazar ever, in Rijeka. The closest place to home.
It is also important to say that our Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art never did an exhibition like this, primarily for children and youth. This way the exhibition is not only something new and interesting for the audience, but for the museum as well.
Finally, the exhibition opened in a very specific time. In the year when Rijeka is the European Capital of Culture, but also in the year that will be forever remembered as the year of COVID-19. We expected this to be the year that would change our town, instead it is the year that changed the world. This fact opens a new set of questions and problems that need to be solved – what do we do with our visitors? How do we develop our audience in the gaps between lockdowns? Do we need different museums?
Unfortunately, Professor Balthazar will not be available to solve these problems for us this time, so we hope the NEMO Conference might help.

Virtual tour of the exhibition Fiume Fantastika: Phenomena of the City, presented by our supporter Rijeka - a European Capital of Culture 2020.
-
Fiume Fantastika: Phenomena of the City.
The exhibition follows the last 150 years of Rijeka’s urban history, during which the city experienced radical growth and became an important transport and industrial centre. The space and the exhibition will be presented by Morana Matkovic and Renato Stanković, DeltaLab programme managers and members of the exhibition's curator team.
Fiume Fantastika: Phenomena of the City is a central exhibition of the Sweet&Salt programme flagship, realized within the Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture project, and presented in the renovated Export warehouse, a new urban hub in centre of Rijeka. Based on recent research by DeltaLab at the University of Rijeka, the exhibition follows the last 150 years of Rijeka’s urban history, during which the city experienced radical growth and became an important transport and industrial centre. Fiume Fantastika: Phenomena of the city tells a story and explains the history of modern urban development of Rijeka and the region, following the influence of economical, political and social processes on the architecture of the city. Both the exhibition and an accompanying publication are results of researching turbulent history during which Rijeka switched various socio-political systems and territorial structures, while urban development focus was based on new technologies and economic effects.
